Auto-Configurable Optical Linking Modules for Mobile Free Space Optical Communications
نویسندگان
چکیده
Existence of line of sight (LOS) and perfect alignment between the communicating modules is one of the key requirements for free space optical communication. To ensure uninterrupted data flow, auto-aligning transmitter and receiver modules are necessary. We propose a new approach based on spherically shaped transmitter and receiver modules (optical antenna) for maintaining optical links even when the two modules are in relative motion. The spherical optical antenna provides angular diversity in 3-dimensions, and hence provides a line of sight at any orientation as long as there are no obstacles between the two communicating modules. To demonstrate the proof-of-concept, we designed and tested an auto-configurable circuit integrated with light sources and detectors placed on spherical surfaces. Communication between a stationary and a mobile optical antenna has been demonstrated.

This paper presents realistic simulation modules to assess characteristics of multi-transceiver free-space-optical (FSO) mobile ad-hoc networks. We start with a physical propagation model for FSO communications in the context of mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). We specifically focus on the drop in power of the light beam and probability of error in the decoded signal due to a number of paramete...
متن کاملBuilding Blocks for Multi-hop and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks with Free Space Optics
Optical wireless, also known as free space optics (FSO) is a high bandwidth communication technology that enables information transmission through atmosphere using modulated light beams. FSO communication technology has attractive characteristics like dense spatial reuse due to light beam directionality, low power usage per bit, and license-free band of operation. FSO networks face two major ch...

In this paper, an enhancement design of communication system using optical radio frequency (RF) waves in free space optical communication (FSO) system is presented. To our knowledge, it is the first time that the effect of Gamma-Gamma turbulent channel model on the performance of the proposed system is analyzed and simulated. To obtain an optical communication system with good performance and h...
متن کاملOptical Antenna: A Three-dimensional Auto-Aligning Building Block for Optical Wireless Ad-hoc Networks
Mobile wireless ad-hoc networks and multi-hop fixed-wireless last-mile networks have been primarily based upon radio frequency (RF) technologies. Although optical networking has become popular in the wired networking world, free space optics (FSO) is still a niche technology used to provide only selected point-to-point links, and not as a general-purpose networking technology. Free-space-optics...
